Flu in Pregnancy and a Nourishing Rice Soup Recipe

Pregnancy is a delicate period that requires special attention to health and well-being. When faced with the flu during this time, Ayurveda, the ancient system of holistic healing, offers valuable insights. Ayurveda suggests adapting to the changes in the body during pregnancy, emphasising the importance of maintaining a balanced digestive fire and minimising the presence of ama, or toxins, in the system.

According to Ayurveda, pregnancy is a time of increased vulnerability to imbalances in the doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) due to hormonal changes and the nourishment demands of the growing fetus. When dealing with the flu, the digestive fire, known as Agni, tends to be lower, making it crucial to choose foods that are easy to digest and supportive of overall well-being.

Ayurvedic Recommendations

1. Fasting or Light Diet: Ayurveda often suggests a light diet or short periods of fasting during illness. This practice allows the digestive system to focus on eliminating toxins and facilitates a quicker recovery.

2. Warm Water: Avoid cold drinks, and sip warm water or herbal infusions throughout the day. It is much easier for your body to absorb the water and stay hydrated when sipping warm liquids.

3. Herbal Remedies: Incorporating herbs like ginger, turmeric and coriander can be beneficial during the flu. Ginger is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, while coriander aids in digestion and helps balance excess heat.
