Ayurvedic Alternatives to hormones and painkillers for the younger generation

At Keyajee, women’s wellness is our focus. Many younger women suffer from painful periods or ‘dysmenorrhea’ as it is called in the medical community. In fact, this is one of the most common medical ailments affecting women at the peak of their reproductive maturity. Often, mainstream doctors will prescribe hormones or painkillers. Hormonal therapies that induce amenorrhoea (the stopping of menstruation) are sometimes prescribed, or oral contraceptives that inhibit menstruation. Yet filling the body with a cocktail of drugs isn’t the best approach for maintaining young women’s wellness. This is where Ayurvedic therapies provide valuable alternatives.

There are two main types of dysmenorrhoea. The first (‘primary’) type affects women who have normal pelvic anatomy, whereas ‘secondary’ dysmenorrhea occurs due to some or other underlying disorder. Risk factors for menstrual cramps or pain include obesity as well as being underweight, being 20 years old or under, smoking and elevated stress.

Ayurvedic treatment for Menstrual Pain

For many young women, wellness can be found through supplementary, supportive treatments. Ayurvedic medicine understands period pain to be caused by the Vata dosha, the elementary energy type associated with movement in the body.

Because dysmenorrhea is seen as being caused by disturbances in Vata and the resulting effects on the body, a large part of Ayurvedic treatment for menstrual pain consists of balancing Vata.

Treatments for period pain include internal treatments (Uttara Basti) that use Ayurvedic herbal preparations as well as external therapies that realign energies and help balance Vata. There are also dietary changes young women who are afflicted can take. These include increasing water intake (preferably warm water as this helps digestion and balances Vata). To balance Vata, it is also wise to avoid salty, spicy, fried and sour foods.

To conclude: Young women who are frequently absent from school, studies or other obligations due to unbearable menstrual pain can find relief with Ayurveda, without having to resort to using drugs that have harmful side effects.

KEYAJEE clinic on London’s Harley Street

On a very hot afternoon in June, Keyajee Clinic,  on London’s Harley Street, hosted our very first open day event.

Harley Street has the greatest reputation of medical expertise of anywhere in the world and Keyajee is delighted to be part of this as the go to place for Ayurvedic treatments.  Although we are based in London and Hertfordshrire, our services have a genuine global reach.

I also regularly travel to my clients’ homes to provide advice and support in more familair surroundings if needed and to spread the word about Ayurvedic practices.

A large number of prospective clients attended the event  and many attendees also took advantage of the opportunity to have a free consultation on the day, and several treatment bookings were confirmed on the spot. Although we never pressure our clients into signing up for a treatment, many do use our open days to help make their final decision.

For many, being able to meet me in person and learn about the treatments for real is all they need to begin their own journey.  Sometimes the most important thing we can do is to take that step, to begin our journey, to just let go.

Keyajee Doula Services

There are many joys in being a new mother, from holding your newborn and resting together to sharing smiles and all the ‘firsts’ that you and baby discover together. Modern mothers often have less time to truly enjoy their newborns due to work and other societal pressures. Even with maternity leave, it can be hard to juggle all the demands that modern women face day to day. This is where an Ayurvedic ‘doula’ can help.

A ‘doula’ (pronounced doo-la) is a caregiver, an experienced woman who supports new mothers emotionally and practically before, during and after childbirth. The role of a doula is to ‘mother the mother’: it is her job to ensure that the new mother she takes care of is able to enjoy the tiring but meaningful time of discovery that is becoming a mother. The support a doula offers new mothers helps the whole family to feel held throughout the process, in such a way that each member of the immediate family can relax and enjoy every stage.

Today’s mother is generally not given the chance to enjoy her pregnancy, labour and new baby because of the pressures that society places upon her. Although she has a strong understanding of women’s physiology, a doula is not a substitute for a midwife or clinician, but rather acts as your pillar of emotional strength and provides practical help around the house in the days or weeks following the birth of your new baby. Doulas who offer postnatal support can work in your home, according to flexible hours, performing housework and other small tasks to ensure that you get the important bonding and rest time you need.

In Western society, mothers are rushed back to day-to-day activities with alarming speed, but in cultures that venerate the birth process, women are often confined to bed rest for up to 40 days after birth. This might be hard to achieve given the pressures of modern living, but your doula will help you experience some of the benefits of the traditional bed rest period. It is a doula’s primary aim to empower your family to stay centred during what can be a stressful and exhausting time in spite of childbirth’s many joys and discoveries.

In contemporary Ayurvedic doula assistance, doulas typically possess a degree of training and are either experienced in childbirth through having had children of their own or through having acquired deep understanding of childbirth through professional study. Doulas who are designated as ‘Doula UK’ qualified have taken an approved course and are either undergoing a mentoring process or have completed sufficient mentoring to be considered ‘Recognized UK doulas’.

New motherhood . . . the romanticised image often portrayed, can often be a far cry from the reality.


Ayurvedic Family Nutrition – Create Balance and Wellbeing

In Ayurveda, balancing the three doshas (the elemental energies that form an individual’s physical and mental constitution) is vital. Ailments and unhappy mental states are the product of any of the doshas – pitta, kapha and vata – being in excess or lacking. Yet certain foods increase certain doshas, while others have a lessening effect. The fiery pitta dosha, for example, is the primary element of many individuals who show classic traits of this dosha, such as a quick temper and argumentative nature. Hot foods such as chilli and pepper increase the Pitta dosha, thus cooling foods are favoured for balancing this type. Once you understand the effects of food on the doshas and how to eat to bring your body and mind into balance, it is easy to work out a health-giving Ayurvedic nutrition plan.

What are the Six Tastes?

In Ayurvedic medicine, there are six tastes – sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter, and astringent – that have distinct characteristics and effects on the body and mind. Certain foods can affect your balance and constitution, and making minor adjustments can help to rebalance your dosha to help stabilise your body and mind.

When you understand the six tastes you can better control your dietary balance and help boost your natural health.


Sweet tastes are said to have a soothing effect, satisfying the psyche and adding body mass. They are associated with Water and Earth and are balanced by Bitter and Astringent tastes.

“Sweet” doesn’t only refer to refined foods like ice-cream, chocolates and sweets. In nature, sweet tastes are expressed by foods such as fruits, grains, natural sugars and milk. Sweet tastes are typically associated with “nourishing” and are abundant in carbohydrate-rich foods.

Sweet foods are said to balance the Vata and Pitta dosha, but eating sweets to excess can upset the Kapha dosha. Excess consumption can also lead to swollen hands and feet, decreased blood flow, increased body mass and increased water retention.


In Ayurveda, “sour” typically refers to sour tastes associated with fermented or acidic foods, such as yoghurt, pickles, beer, wine, and fruits like peaches, tomatoes, lemons and other citrus fruits. This taste is associated with Fire and Earth and is balanced by Astringent tastes.

Sour tastes such as tomatoes and citrus fruits stimulate the appetite and are said to aid digestion (although they should be avoided by heartburn sufferers). They are also thought to balance Vata and upset Pitta and Kapha dosha if they are enjoyed in excess.


Salty tastes are associated with Air and Water, and help to bring out the flavour in other foods and stimulate our hunger for life too. Salt can act as a laxative, helping to break down blockages, and also helps to increase blood pressure, cause water retention and combat dryness.

Salty foods not only enhance appetite and enliven the tastes of other foods, they are also said to balance Vata in moderation. Too much salt will increase Kapha and Pitta dosha, and can cause imbalances in the body. Remember that Ayurveda recommends careful use of mineral salts, not refined salts!


Pungent foods are what make hot and spicy foods spicy. They are really good for cleansing and clearing the body, helping to increase circulation and stimulate blood-flow. They’re associated with Air and Fire, and are sharp, intense tastes that are highly stimulating and fast-acting. These tastes are balanced by sweet.

Pungent foods such as chillies and garlic promote sweating and clear the sinus, and thus balance the watery Kapha dosha. Excessive consumption irritates Vata and Pitta, and can also cause ulcers, digestive problems and burning.


Bitter herbs and tastes are cooling, light, clearing and drying. They are a natural cleanser for your body, stimulating natural detoxification and digestion. They are associated with Ether and Air, and are balanced by Sweet.

Bitter foods such as green leafy vegetables are detoxifying for the body, and balance both Kapha and Pitta. If eaten excessively, bitter foods can increase Vata and cause gas or indigestion. Unprocessed coffee and chocolate are naturally bitter, as well as dandelions and neem.


Astringent herbs are drying or drawing, and typically make the mouth feel dry and cleansed. They are associated with Air and Earth, and are balanced by salty, sour and sweet.

Astringent foods are high in minerals and include leafy greens, new bananas and tart apples. These tastes are particularly good for helping to soothe gastro inflammation as they are associated with cooling. Foods such as lentils, dried beans and cauliflower help to balance Kapha and Pitta, but too much will increase Vata.

Each of the six tastes has unique benefits, and over-indulging in those foods can cause irrigation in the body. It is essential to approach your diet and food preparation with careful consideration and balance.

Even though your body’s needs are individual and unique to you, it is important that we eat each of the six tastes at every meal. This helps to create the best balance for your body, ensuring that all of the important nutrients and food groups are represented in your diet and that you are satisfied and content. Listening to your body and remembering the six tastes will give your body a healthy and balanced boost.

What is your body type?

As women we come in a great variety of shapes and sizes. Knowing your body type is crucial to forming an Ayurvedic eating plan that will support your health goals. Feeling low on energy? Eating correctly for your body type can help with issues such as this, by bringing your doshas into balance. People in whom the ‘vata’ dosha is strongest tend to have a light build and may be prone to dry skin. Pitta body types are often thicker set and more muscular, and many pitta types have fair skin and/or reddish hair. Kapha types tend to have a heavier build than those whose body types are aligned to vata or pitta.

What is your mind type?

The mind and body are interlinked in complex ways, thus the doshas also affect our thought processes. The well woman package will also help you to find out which of the doshas is most pronounced in your psychological makeup. Pitta mind types tend to be orderly and focused. They have great mental acuity and concentration, typically, and are usually self-confident and assertive, although this can be expressed as aggressive or demanding if this dosha is out of balance.

Kapha mind types tend to be more easygoing and relaxed. Women who have strongly kapha-influenced minds show affection easily and tend to be forgiving and compassionate. They also tend to have especially good long-term memory. A danger of the kapha mind type is depression, so if you are predominantly kapha in type, your Well Woman package will be tailored towards easing this type of difficulty

Vata minds show great creativity and mental alertness, and are both quick to grasp new ideas but also quick to forget. Although vata mind types are often joyful if balanced, an excess of vata can be signalled by unnecessary anxiety and fear. If you are vata type, your Well Woman package will work with these possible tendencies.

Factors affecting your health

There are three major lifestyle factors that affect your health: those of the body, the mind and your environment.

Body health factors include the nourishment you give your body, which in turn also affects your mind through the close interlinking of mind and body via the doshas. Exercise helps to maintain balance, as does good eating. Part of your Well Woman package will entail learning Ayurvedic principles to make the body factor contribute positively to your total wellbeing.

Mind factors, besides being influenced by the state of the body, also depend on other circumstances – family history, genetics, and your relationships with others. Balance can be found through Ayurvedic therapies, a good nutrition plan and other health-bringing changes that your Well Woman package will help you implement.

Environment factors are sometimes the hardest to control, but as you embark on a process of self-discovery through Ayurveda you will empower yourself to recognize changes you can make to your environment that will have a positive impact on your health.

In order to lead a physically, emotionally and spiritually fulfilling life, it is important that each of the three pillars of life is strong and balance-giving. These three pillars are diet, sleep and sex. Ayurvedic diet can of course help the latter two, but there are many ways to work at strengthening these pillars. Welcome to Spring! Most definitely the most upligting time of year as the birds, bees, flowers, trees and of course us! are all recovering from a long sluggish winter, and all those coughs and Keyajee  is here to help us balance the change in season and get us envigourated for the year ahead.

With every changing season you will find some of the deliscious Recipes included in our courses ** (please note we only publish receipes after a course has taken place). We are starting with Spring and in order to prepare our bodies for these seasonal changes we need to strengthen our innerslves by choosing the appropriate seasonal foods, spices, herbs, and cooking methods that correlate with each changing season, we are bringing both our physical and emotional bodies into balance and harmony with nature. Early spring is an ideal season for begining a new diet and losing weight . Spring fasting (the Christian tradition of Lent is the period of forty days which comes before Easter in the Christian calendar, traditionally a time of fasting and reflection. It is preceded by Shrove Tuesday and begins with Ash Wednesday, the traditional time of year for many cultures to help cleanse the blood after a long winter of fatty, heavy foods.

Early spring (Kapha) typically a season of warming temperatures lasting from February to mid-May.. Spring is a time of cleansing and renewal.
